Practical work needs.

Looking at employment from the point of view of the worker, the first thing that she/he needs is a job. The next thing is some information about what to do on the job. After that there is the need for work skills such as computer literacy. The three "R"s are always needed and their need should always be pointed out. Finally some sort of indication is needed that success, in the new position, is possible.

One of the issues in being successful at the job is the matter of getting along with others. As family priorities change, the matter of "civil deportment" is often not taught in the home as was formerly the case. This produces students and prospective employees who do not know the common rules of deportment. For this reason and others, they often do not get along well with their peers.
Teaching these skills in school my be something for the educational system to seriously consider. High School ROTC programs are useful in teaching comportment, where they are available.

Another issue is "What constitutes computer literacy"? Specifically, does "computer literacy" include the ability to use spreadsheet programs? It is the opinion of the author that spreadsheet knowledge is an important  component of computer literacy.

In most High Schools, there are no classes that teach students how to wait on customers at a retail store. Nor are there classes on how to work in the kitchen of a fast food restaurant. Such skills as mentioned above not only provide useful skills, but convey the message that staying in school can be helpful in obtaining a job after High School.
